NUEVA YORK, CAPITAL DEL MUNDO
Nueva York está considerada como una ciudad global, dadas sus influencias a nivel mundial en los medios de comunicación, en la política, en la educación, en el entretenimiento y en la moda. La influencia artística y cultural de la ciudad es de las más fuertes del país. Además, en ella se encuentra la sede central de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas, lo que también la convierte en un importante punto de las relaciones internacionales.
Madrileños por el Mundo: Otoño en Nueva York
Es la ciudad de ciudades, la urbe por antonomasia, capital del mundo... La ciudad que nunca duerme, donde todo vale y que además tiene uno de los otoños más bonitos del mundo.
Aquí hemos conocido a un grupo de madrileños que trabajan duro en la tierra de las oportunidades, pero a la vez brutalmente competitiva.
Con ellos recorremos los rincones más representativos de la ciudad y conocemos un estilo de vida donde la bicicleta es protagonista; donde aprender a dar la propina justa es todo un arte; donde la lavadora está prohibida por ley, el seguro médico es imprescindible y enterrarte en el cementerio de Manhattan puede costar un millón de dólares. Una ciudad donde además puedes tomar un chupito de zumo de césped o una pizza de chocolate y nubes. Es lo que tiene Nueva York.

Hoy os invito a conocer la ciudad que nunca duerme, la ciudad que habéis visto en mil películas, la ciudad de los sueños. Bueno, o es de los sueños o nunca duerme, una de dos. The headquarters of the United Nations is in New York and most countries have a consulate here. Immigrants (and their descendants) from over 180 countries live here, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Travellers are attracted to New York City for its culture, energy and cosmopolitanism. English is the primary language spoken by most New Yorkers although in many communities it is common to hear other languages that are generally widely understood. In many neighborhoods, there is a large Latino/Hispanic population, and many New Yorkers speak Spanish. Most cab drivers speak either Arabic, Hindi or Bengali. There are also many neighborhoods throughout the city that have a high concentration of Chinese immigrants where Mandarin or Cantonese may be useful. In some of these neighborhoods, some locals may not speak very good English, but store owners and those who would deal frequently with tourists or visitors all will speak English.

The earliest Europeans in New York were French colonists and Jesuit missionaries who came down from settlements at Montreal for trade and proselytizing. New York was inhabited by various tribes of Algonquian and Iroquoian speaking Native Americans at the time Dutch settlers moved into the region in the early 17th century. In 1609, the region was first claimed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch. They built Fort Nassau in 1614 at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, where the present-day capital of Albany later developed. The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson River Valley, establishing the colony of New Netherland based on trade and profitmaking. It was a multicultural community from the earliest days and the center of trade and immigration. The British annexed the colony from the Dutch in 1664. The borders of the British colony, the Province of New York, were quite similar to those of the present-day state.
